No Need to Worry

Worry (verb): give way to anxiety or unease; allow one’s mind to dwell on difficulty or troubles.

It’s easy to worry, isn’t it? About the people we love. Personal health concerns. The health of our neighbourhoods. Our work life. Our church life. The weight of world events. There’s plenty to concern us—many things that need our attention, our prayers, our deliberate effort.

But even as we work at the things that concern us, we don’t need to give way to anxiety or unease. We don’t need to dwell on difficulty or troubles. Instead, the gospel of John encourages us to dwell on Christ:
Abide in me as I abide in you.
John 15:4

Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.
John 14:1

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.
John 14:27

We have “no need to worry,” writes Ruth Smith Meyer in her paraphrase of Psalm 23. We have no need to worry because

  • God watches over us for our well-being,
  • waits with us,
  • wraps us in kindness and wisdom,
  • welcomes, nourishes, refreshes, and guides us.

Thank you, Ruth, for sending your paraphrase and granting permission to reprint it here. May your words encourage and refresh us.

Psalm 23 with the Letter W
by Ruth Smith Meyer

Because the Lord is my Wonderful Watchman,
there’s no need to worry
for my wants are wrapped in his wisdom.

He waits with me while I unwind in the meadow grass
and willingly leads me to quiet waters for refreshment.

He whispers wholesome wisdom that replenishes my strength
and helps me draw from his well-spring so I can honor him.

Even when I walk through the dark wastelands
and what may be the windup of my life,
I can be worry-free,
for you watch out for my well-being,
wrap me in your presence,
and don’t withhold your step-by-step guidance
in the way I should take.

You provide wonderful nourishment
even in the presence of waspish and wicked people.

You welcome me as your guest and surround me
with a veritable windfall of blessing.

The wealth of your goodness and wonderful, widespread kindness
shall wrap me in your presence all my life
and I shall look forward to the warmth of living with you forever.

My Abba Psalm (in A) – Elfrieda Schroeder

Abba is my Alpha and my Omega.
Absolute rest beside green pastures and aquamarine streams
acquiesce my soul to acquire the right paths for my Abba’s sake.
I am not afraid even though I walk through alleys.
Abba, you are with me. Your arms around me give me absolute assurance. Abundance at my table astounds my archenemies.
You anoint my head with oil.
Abba, it is above and beyond what I need!
Astounding assurance of your absolute love assists me always.
I will abide in Abba’s abode all of my days.

At his command, I lay couched in clover,

He firms up my footing, affirming the fame of his Fatherliness.
Finding myself in foggy frame of mind,
I fear no foe, for I am fastened to you.
You fend off fierce foxes and you feel my feelings.
You fix a feast for me in front of ferocious fools.

For your friendship and faithful love is fail-proof
and will fervently follow me, and I will be fulfilled in Father’s family forever.

My master multiplies magnificent meals as I meet multitudes of the malevolent; my mind is marinating in his munificence.
