Refresh, Revive, Restore, Renew

Last year I started with Simplify as my word of the year. I tried to focus on one thing at a time instead of running in five different directions all at once. I streamlined my bill-paying. I organized my jumble of a linen closet so I can now easily find whatever I’m looking for. I loved simplifying my life in these ways.

But I also discovered that I love some complexity in my life. I love having a number of different projects on the go. I love my combination of writing, editing, and speaking where I can use my gifts and connect with different people and learn new things. I love the way each day is different from the one before.

So instead of trying to simplify everything, for 2025, my new word of the year is Refresh:

  • to restore or revive
  • to freshen up
  • to update or renew.

I’ve already started:

  • reviving my daily gratitude practice with the new journal I received for Christmas
  • defrosting and freshening up my freezer which was long overdue
  • updating my websites—using the new-to-me WordPress editor and a new theme for When You Work for the Church and updating this website in ways that are less obvious but improve the way it functions.

I’m already starting to feel refreshed, and look forward to more!

Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength;
they will fly up on wings like eagles;
they will run and not be tired;
they will walk and not be weary.
Isaiah 40:31

    My word for the year is “create”. I read an article in the Winnipeg Free Press about Oaxaca a town in Mexico where they grow radishes and create all kinds of things with them. The mayor suggested “Resolve to make some time for a radish or two. Make art or songs or poetry from whatever you have, and in the process, perhaps find a way to create for yourself, and those around you A happier more fulfilling New Year.”

    1. I love your word of the year, Elfrieda, and what a wonderful quote! We create with whatever we have for ourselves and others. I’m very interested in how this might unfold for you this year.

    What a wonderful post, April!!

    I love this idea or “refresh” and hope you don’t mind if I “borrow” it for my word of the year. It opens up so many possibilities which can be easily managed.

    1. Please borrow, Kathy – I would love the company! We’ll have to compare notes on what and how we are refreshed this year.
